In 1654, the Matinecock Native Americans sold 3,000 acres (12 km²) of what is now called Lloyd Neck to English settlers from Oyster Bay. The Matinecock referred to the region as Caumsett (place by sharp rock). In 1676, James Lloyd acquired the neck, which was then taken over by his son Henry. Henry Lloyd farmed the land and erected a house, which still survives in Caumsett State Park. After his death in 1763, his son Joseph built the Joseph Lloyd Manor House, which he was forced to abandon by the British during the Revolutionary War. The British built several fortifications in the neck, including Fort Franklin. Henry Lloyd IV was the last Lloyd to own the estate, in 1841. In the 1880's, it became a stop for steamboats coming from New York City, bringing tourists and wealthy New Yorkers. The 1900's ushered the era of the Long Island Gold Coast, and various wealthy families began to buy land and build seaside mansions and estates. These included William Matheson, Marshal Field III, Ronald Conklin, Harold Dimppel Sr., Ferdinand Eberstadt and George McKesson. In 1926, Lloyd Neck and West Neck became incorporated as a municipality which was named Lloyd Harbor. Charles Lindbergh and Billy Joel at one point lived on the Neck. Currently many of these estates have been adapted for other uses. Marshal Field's estate is now Caumsett State Park, the Conklin estate is a Roman Catholic seminary. Others have become a county park and a wildlife refuge. The Banbury estate is now a conference center for Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

As of the United States 2000 Census, the total population of all four counties of Long Island was 7,448,618. Long Island has a climate that is very similar to other coastal areas of the Northeastern United States; it has warm, humid summers and cold winters, but the Atlantic Ocean helps bring afternoon sea breezes that temper the heat in the warmer months and limit the frequency and severity of thunderstorms. In the wintertime, temperatures are warmer than areas further inland (especially in the night and early morning hours), sometimes causing a snowstorm further inland to fall as rain on the island. However, measurable snow falls every winter, and in many winters one or more intense storms called Nor'easters produce blizzard conditions with snowfalls of 1-2 feet (30-60 cm) and near-hurricane force winds. Long Island temperatures also vary from west to east, with the western part of the island warmer on most occasions than the east. This is due to two factors; one because the western part is closer to the mainland and the other is the western part is more developed causing what is known as the "urban heat island" effect. The eastern part is cooler on most occasions due to the ocean and sound and it being less developed.
